About A-2 Steel

A-2 Steel is an air-hardening tool steel containing five percent chromium which replaces the oil hardening (O1 tool steel). A2 is a good choice when safer hardening, less distortion and increased wear-resistance are required for a job. In addition, A2 steel provides an intermediate grade between the oil hardening and the high carbon, high chromium (D2 tool steel) types.
Overall A2 provides a good balance of characteristics including:
  • Good machine-ability
  • High compression strength
  • Very good non-deforming properties
  • Deep hardening
  • High dimensional stability after hardening and tempering
